Overview
Lead a team of service technicians within a designated geographic area or specific project/customer assignment to meet customer needs for service and maintenance. This includes the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems commonly found in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain excellent relationships with customers. Be knowledgeable about customer systems, business processes, and administrative support.
- Pursue personal growth and actively support the development of technicians. Engage in screening, interviewing, and hiring new team members.
- Assist the Service Manager in surveying new customer sites and quoting service and maintenance needs. Help with job quoting, staffing, estimating, and understanding project costs and drivers.
- Implement relevant training programs and provide opportunities for ongoing professional development for technicians.
- Coordinate technical guidance and training for service technicians.
- Utilize strong problem-solving and prioritization skills to manage conflicts among technicians, peers, leadership, and customers.
- Champion change initiatives throughout the organization. Mentor newer team members to ensure compliance with systems and processes.
- Conduct prescribed maintenance on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers.
- Use system knowledge to align customer needs with potential sales opportunities and perform rapid, accurate diagnostics.
- Manage truck inventory efficiently, ordering and maintaining parts while minimizing waste. Ensure assigned vehicle cleanliness and adhere to company guidelines for maintenance.
- Complete all necessary documentation (work tickets and time sheets) and electronic communications accurately and professionally. Use hand-held devices for paperwork and invoicing.
- Systematically use tools to inspect joints, install PVC drain pipes, set and trim cases, install and adjust glass doors and frames, use temperature sensors, and apply brazing and soldering techniques.
- Identify pipe sizes and fittings visually, perform refrigerant and oil conversions, and conduct electric welding on various metals and joint types.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and size thermostatic expansion valves. Understand pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, and complex schematic diagrams.
- Demonstrate knowledge of low and high-pressure oil systems, refrigeration startup, EMS controls, CO2 systems, airflow characteristics, motor VFDs, defrost types, and advanced wiring diagrams.
- Detect and repair leaks, perform compressor diagnostics and replacements, and manage oil systems effectively.
- Serve as a mentor to other technicians and lead HVAC/R preventive maintenance programs.
Qualifications
- Required: High School Diploma/GED
- Preferred: HVAC-R Technical School Degree
- External Candidates: 7 years in the field or 5 years with Technical School Certification
- Internal Candidates: 3 years as a Certified Technician with completion of OJT and Skills Assessment

- Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record in accordance with Fleet Policy.
- Physical ability to walk distances, bend, crouch, climb ladders, work at heights, and lift/carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and high motivation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic maintenance tasks and hand tools.
- Availability to work nights and/or weekends as required.
- Preferred knowledge of basic refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, and HVAC systems.
- Strong leadership, communication skills, and business acumen.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Superior decision-making and documentation skills.
- Ability to schedule work for other technicians and effectively teach the required skills.
