Overview
This role involves performing routine maintenance on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers with minimal supervision. You will also conduct maintenance, diagnosis, and repairs on refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems typically found in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities, with some guidance from a Master or Lead Technician.
Responsibilities
- Carry out routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers. Demonstrate a working knowledge of these systems with some direction from a Master or Lead Service Technician.
- Perform preventative maintenance in convenience stores and small-format supermarkets, including compressor replacements, leak detection, and coil cleaning.
- Identify and repair leaks in piping systems, solder copper-to-brass and copper-to-steel connections, diagnose airflow issues, install PVC drain pipes, and replace evaporator and condenser motors. Use temperature meters and sensors, receive and install blower coils, fabricate supports, power wash air-cooled condensing units, and service Hussmann brand products, all under the guidance of a Master or Lead Technician.
- Complete necessary documentation (work tickets and time sheets) and electronic communications thoroughly and professionally. Utilize hand-held devices for customer paperwork and invoicing.
- Maintain an organized and accurate truck inventory and adhere to vehicle maintenance guidelines as applicable.
- Build and maintain excellent customer relationships, clearly communicating equipment and system issues using appropriate terminology.
- Understand basic electrical schematics, including voltage, amperage, and resistance.
- Troubleshoot and replace thermostatic expansion valves (TEVs).
- Demonstrate knowledge of subcooling, superheat, refrigerant and oil properties, vacuum levels, system evacuation and charging, pump-down procedures, defrost types, single-phase compressor start components, recovery setup, torch setup, and both conventional and parallel rack system layouts.
- Show proficiency with gauges, scales, recovery systems, ECMs, shaded pole motors, PSCs, and three-phase motors.
- Safely handle R290 refrigerant and other hazardous materials like dry nitrogen.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
- Required: High School Diploma/GED
- Preferred: HVAC-R Technical School Degree
- External Candidates: 5 years in the field or 3 years with Technical School Certification
- Internal Candidates: 1 year as a Qualified Technician with completion of OJT and Skills Assessment
Additional Information:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record in accordance with Fleet Policy.
- Physically capable of walking distances, bending, crouching, climbing ladders, working at heights, and lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and high motivation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, including basic maintenance knowledge and proficiency with hand tools.
- Availability to work nights and/or weekends as needed.
- Preferred knowledge of basic and commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems.
- Strong leadership abilities and business acumen.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Superior decision-making and documentation skills.
